The game on ps5 i’ve been waiting for since i got one basically… The switch has remained my most played platform after all these years because of the lack of games like this, for me the essense of gaming… It’s a perfect recipe for a 3D platformer, encouraging you to explore every nook and cranny in search of those adorable little droids. The first of these levels allows Astro to borrow the Leviathan Axe from God of War’s Kratos. You press the R2 button to use your ability and it flies through the sky. Anybody familiar with the game that gave life to this special level instantly understands what to do.

I don’t deny this game is great, his character with the beams with his legs/his charming character design/personality & visuals are great, but that’s not enough for me.
Although the game contained the standard gameplay and stages (such as a fire and water level) that are expected of every platformer game, Team Asobi found a way to make these mainstays feel new and fresh. It was as if the developers asked themselves what typical elements were expected of a platformer, then found a way to organically incorporate them into the game. Sometimes, it’s with fantastic power-ups like the Time Stopper, which beautifully slows down time to let Astro Bot jump on platforms and evade obstacles. Other times, the layout of getting from Points A to B involved a vast spectacle for players to witness and interact with. Players guide Astro Bot through dynamic environments filled with moving platforms, enemies, and interactive objects.
It’s a highlight of how great Astro Bot’s level design is, which easily ranks high among other action platforming gems with its reasonably hidden secrets and gravity-challenging stages. Still, Astro Bot fails to feel as revolutionary or varied as games that pushed the genre, like Super Mario Odyssey. While the game has many exhilarating moments, Astro Bot’s desire to showcase PlayStation gear and characters can feel like it’s holding the game back from being something unique.

Astro Bot has proven to be not only one of Sony’s most successful games but one of the most successful games of all time, at least critically speaking. Many of us with backlogs probably don’t feel it that’s the thing. The games have lots of fun platforming to execute, with grappling hooks and hover-jumps and all kinds of fun things. There are also plenty of alien and robotic enemies and bosses to take on. But that’s not the only way Astro Bot celebrates history, as that idea is also directly tied to the game’s collectibles. In every level, there are a number of bots to rescue and puzzle pieces to find. Puzzle pieces help reveal new features in your base at the crash site, like costumes. Saving bots brings them to your base, but having more bots also lets you solve puzzles around the crash site.
Players can describe what they look like, but that’s about it. This robs the enemies of the kind of simple but memorable personalities that even the most generic Bots have. Nebulas is the main antagonist of the series, a space bully who loves causing trouble for Astro and his friends. He’s a green-skinned alien with a massive mouth, always looking for ways to make life difficult for the crew.
I could go on and on about every unique level, but the wonder of Astro Bot lies in discovery itself. That’s why Astro Bot feels as consequential as it does even if it just looks like your average 3D platformer full of collectibles and clever power-ups at a glance. The expertly designed PS5 exclusive plays like an intervention with its own publisher. It brings the PlayStation platform on an intergalactic journey through its history to rediscover its long lost sense of wonder. It’s not just a very effective ad for Sony; it’s an exuberant adventure that remembers that there’s power in play. At one time, this was a fundamental video game experience; a 3D platformer was just about the coolest game you could have.
And while there are many routes that platformers can take, the way Astro Bot celebrated the brand really helped prop it up as something special. While more of an extension of its previous titles than something all-new, it sounds like Team Asobi has cooked another stellar game. With over 80 stages and more than 15 power ups, players that wanted more of Astro’s Playroom will unlikely be dissatisfied.
Is it good with cameos yes (not a graveyard indeed), is it good with core mechanics IT OFFERS yes, level design eh the themes are generic. @ s8 of them are from the defunct Japan Studio that was shut down by Sony in 2021. Those devs are also real gamers with passion and vision who made tons of classic and unique games back then.
